Since we transformed our 1962 Shasta Airflyte into an Austin Texas mobile photo booth, we've gotten to document many amazing events near and far from our homebase in ATX. We get all sorts of questions about these wonderful "canned ham" style trailers, from clients and admirers of all things retro. Certainly, an Austin Texas mobile photo booth for weddings, birthdays, showers, and other events wasn't what Robert Gray had in mind when he built the first Shasta trailer over 75 years ago. With humble beginnings, the company was founded in Los Angeles, California to produce mobile home trailers for the US Armed Forces.
The company steadily expanded, and by 1958 they opened a new plant in Indiana to keep up with the increasing demand. Around this time they also added their signature "wings," which remained the brand's most recognizable feature until the early 1980's. Shasta became the best selling trailer brand in the United States, and they continued to open new production plants across the country.
By the mid 1960's Shasta trailers had been redesigned with a more modern, square body, and by the early 1970's there were almost 500 Shasta dealerships in the country, and people couldn't get enough of their clean lines, bold exterior stripes, and distinctive wings. Coachman bought the Shasta brand in 1976, and eventually Shasta made nearly every type of home a nomad would want - travel trailers, 5th wheels, motorhomes, and pop up campers!
The explosion of road trip culture seemed to die down in the late 1990's, as gas prices started to rise. In 2000, Shasta's extensive line of trailers and motorhomes was pared down, and was eventually reintroduced again as a division of Forest River Inc. Last year, they re-issued the 1961 Airflyte model in a limited number, much to the delight of fans and collectors of the brand. (This is the type that our Austin Texas mobile photo booth is, very old-school type of Shasta!)
In recent years, many vintage Shasta trailers have been lovingly renovated into businesses like our Austin Texas mobile photo booth. All you have to do is take a short drive around Austin to see that the trailer trend hasn't just caught on - it's on fire! From snow cone stands to salons on wheels, the whimsical wings and unique stylings of vintage Shasta trailers still capture the hearts and imaginations of free spirited entrepreneurs, with companies as unique and captivating as the trailers they reside in.
